5/17/10 — This Week in Gaming

Posted on May 19th, 2010 by Andrew Triplett

I left you guys last week with some hope of building hype for this week’s releases. I think that it was justified, so hopefully you will too. I’ll cut straight to the chase and let you read what’s releasing this week!

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Date Genre PS3 360 Wii DS PSP PC
5/18/2010 Action/Adventure X X X X   X
In true Prince of Persia fashion, this game is a true platformer at heart. You can jump and climb like no other along with killing bad guys along the way! It’s unfortunate that the combat aspect of the game is rather lacking, but the platform aspect of the game shines like usual. Oddly enough, the Wii version of the game has been receiving better reviews than the other console counterparts. The unique experience of the game on the Wii appears to be an improvement!
Alan Wake
Date Genre PS3 360 Wii DS PSP PC
5/18/2010 Action/Adventure   X
Alan Wake dubs itself a “psychological action thriller”. It aims at being a game that carves its own path through the gaming industry. You’ll find yourself in spooky situations while disposing of evil creatures left and right. You’ll find the storytelling quite compelling and the overall dark mood of the game keeping you interested. The lighting and music also contribute to the eeriness. You’ll find yourself playing this game for roughly 12 hours. You’ll find this game just as fun to watch as it is to play, so feel free to invite others in on the fun!
Red Dead Redemption
Date Genre PS3 360 Wii DS PSP PC
5/18/2010 Shooter X X

***GAME OF THE WEEK***

Red Dead Redemption is actually a surprise to me for being this week’s game of the week. I came in here with some preconceived notions that Alan Wake would walk away with the title, but overall, this game just seems more fun and appealing to more gamers. I mean, it’s created by the guys behind Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar). In some ways, it’s similar to that series in that you’re thrown into an open world and have the ability to do just about anything you want. You can expect to dump at least 20-40 hours in the single player campaign of this old western, but if you decide to hop online, you can bet on spending MUCH more time there! You’re able to hop into another persistent world with 15 other people and level up your character doing whatever you want. You can also be more competitive and play Red Dead Redemption’s version of deathmatch and capture the flag. All in all, this game has garnered great reviews and is a must-play.

Now wasn’t that a satisfying lineup? I personally plan on trying my hand at a couple of these games — and I encourage you to do the same thing. All your bases are covered just about! There are even some solid games that I haven’t even mentioned.
For instance:
Dark Age’s newest downloadable content released this week allows you to take the role of the darkspawn in an alternate reality.
Shrek Forever After brings the movie to life on most consoles for all you green ogre fans.
Trauma Team for the Wii allows you to take part as a doctor with the ability to diagnose and treat patients.

If these games don’t tickle your fancy, I honestly do not know what will! Until next week…
