There is no contradiction here. In fact, that is kind of the point of the entire piece: that even an accurate message can be inadequate if it is not handled in a timely manner. Even though Benteen could easily decode the message, it could not have resulted in action on his part that could have effectively changed the situation on the ground, at least not for Custer himself. As one Lakota remembered it, the fighting “lasted no longer than a hungry man needed to eat his lunch.” Thanks for the comment, and the eagle eye on the typo–I hate it when those things slip by!

Regarding Custer’s last message to Benteen, you wrote: “Though brief, this message conveyed a lot of information. Captain Frederick Benteen, in command of Custer’s left flank, would have instantly recognized the importance of the message: a large number of aggressive enemies had been encountered, and Custer needed Benteen’s men and ammunition packs that they possessed.”

Then, in the end of your article, you conclude by writing: “At that point, a terse, eight-word message could not be edecoded (sic) by Benteen in a way that could have helped Custer and his men.”

In brief, you are saying Custer’s last message, though short, accurately described to Benteen the emergency at hand; but later you write how Custer’s last message was not adequate enough.

Why are you contradicting yourself?
