Patrick Lencioni has changed the idea of working in teams once again with his WIDGET model. We have embraced this new perspective on work at Dexcomm. Very quickly, the results were noticeable. People working in their area of genius and less in their areas of working frustration and a happier, more productive workplace was the result.
If you are like me, you have a genius of tenacity. While it may seem like a matter of buckling down and getting it done, I have found that there are some tips and tricks that have helped myself and my coworkers to get the most from their working genius of tenacity. Here are our favorite 5:
1) Be mindful of your altitude - I also have wonder as a working genius and will find myself moving back and forth from a high altitude (Wonder) to a low altitude (Tenacity) frequently. This is necessary for anyone helping to run a business and understanding the distinct phases of the project will help to fully push it across the finish line. Connect with your other working genius members from Wonder, Invention, Discernment, and Enablement to fully harness the power of working in teams. Otherwise, you will spin your wheels.
2) Build your Emotional Intelligence (EQ) - Service companies are people centered businesses. Contact centers and home services companies are squarely within this category. Seeing the people side of your business for what it really is - the literal heartbeat of your company- keeps you in touch with your own emotions and those of others. This is data you can use to move forward. Building upon your EQ and interpersonal skills will help you to harness your tenacity for getting results and completing work without becoming a bulldozer.
3) Have fun while getting things accomplished - finishing projects and delivering on outcomes drives tenacious workers. It is a reward unto itself. Remember to celebrate with your team and have fun while work is being done. Celebrating successes will generate more successes. Thank your team and reward and recognize them in a fun, positive, manner.
4)Break tasks down when projects are getting stuck- get back to wonderer and inventor to make sure the goals are clear and the problem or opportunity you are tackling is understood. We have found that a lack of galvanizers and enablers can cause progress to halt faster than anything. Was the invention discerned fully? Shiny ideas and half-baked plans are hard to accomplish, and even if you do make them happen, will it have the outcome for your business that you need?
5) Lastly, know when enough is enough. You cannot work endless hours and expect the same level of productivity. You also cannot expect your coworkers to do the same. You may be in the zone completing work, but longer and longer hours will take their toll on your family and friends. Tenacity is as much about momentum and execution as it is about completing your mountain of a to do list for the day. Stop for the day, recharge, and come back with all your working genius.
Keep these tips in mind as you work in your genius of tenacity. You will finish work sooner and meet goals faster.
